The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes (the “vital few”) Wikipedia

When working with food, this principle is more than a principle, is a reality. Many farmers and other Food Makers may ignore it, but they will see it reflected in their most profitable crops, the most supportive customers and their most effective sales strategy.

Unfortunately, even though we know about it, we don't act on it with coherence. Instead we spread our Food Business thin in between small customers that leave little to no profit, and new products or crops that only are sold once in a while, or with farms stands or facebook ads that are not effective for the type of customers you want to reach.

Focus is key when working on a business, and even more in one that deals with the vital sources to support life (I am talking about Food). A business might need only 100 true fans, 100 people that is invested and committed to the success of your company. 100 spokespersons, 100 live speakers of your brand.

How to find my 20% causes?

🌡️ Measure.

Measure what you want to know more of. Sounds simple but critical.

If you want to know what your most profitable crop is, go and check your records and figure out which takes less time, less inputs and more revenue.

If you want to know your most supportive Food Lovers, make a list of the names of your customers as they come to your mind, and then check your records and find how much have they have bought from you in the last six months.

If you want to know your most effective sales channel, find out the amount of revenue from each source.
